Distance and gain depend heavily on access — a forest road reaches the upper trailhead, and the full Suntop Trail (#1183) runs much longer. Confirm current road and gate status before driving up.
Suntop Lookout delivers one of the best Mount Rainier views you can earn with your dog in tow. The lookout sits above 5,000 feet on the Suntop Trail (#1183) in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, and the panorama of Rainier and the Cascade crest from the top is genuinely spectacular.
A note on distance
Suntop is unusual because how far you hike depends entirely on where you start. A forest road climbs toward an upper trailhead, and when the gate is open the walk to the lookout can be very short; when the gate is closed, the standard hike is a short, steep climb of roughly 2 miles round trip with about 1,100 feet of gain. The full Suntop Trail is far longer (the complete route is many miles). Treat the figures here as the typical short-route estimate and confirm road and gate status before you drive up.
With your dog
The U.S. Forest Service requires dogs to be on leash on Trail #1183. The grade is steep in places, so pace your dog on the way up and take advantage of the lookout to rest and rehydrate. A Northwest Forest Pass is typically required to park.
